Pizza Lab

photo pizza lab pizza

Since eliminating gluten grains from my diet two years ago, I’ve lost 45 pounds, eliminated chronic joint pain and heart burn… but, I have not eliminated my occasional craving for pizza.  Lucky me, the Pizza Lab in Central City now has gluten free crust.

I’ve enjoyed the gluten free pizza at Beau Jo’s in Rapid City, and now it great to have options in the Northern Black Hills.  Just the crust is gluten free, so this may not be an option for celiacs – just for people who keep their gluten exposure to a minimum.

Many Choices

They have so many unique flavors to choose from you’ll have to eat there several times to try them all.  My favorites are the Meatza and the Thai Chicken.  Visit my Deadwood website to see the Pizza Lab menu.

And, don’t forget most truffles at the Chubby Chipmunk are also gluten free.  So save room for dessert and make the short drive after you finish your pizza.

photo produce from bountiful baskets in Deadwood SD

The Bountiful Baskets program is really catching on in the Black Hills.  It is a food co-op program that pools money together to get great deals on produce and help farmers find a market for their crops.

Deadwood is one of the latest editions to the program.  The other four South Dakota Locations include: Black Hawk, Box Elder, Custer and Sturgis.  Read my previous Bountiful Basket post, to learn about the other pickup points.  As of right now, all pick-ups are on Saturday.  Visit the SD page for current locations.

The program is pretty simple, on Monday the offerings for the Saturday pick-up are posted on the website.  Then you can log in and choose what you’d like.  Keep in mind, offerings are not available every week.  To get familiar with the program, I recommend reading the new participant instructions a few times.

What is in the baskets?

The baskets are loaded with seasonal fruits and vegetables.  It varies each time and it is kind of exciting looking through.  They also offer additional produce add-ons.  Like last time we ordered, we also got a 20 pound box of tomatoes and a 20 pound box of Cara Cara Naval Oranges.  Plus we got the Asian vegetable mix.  It had Water Chestnuts (we made bacon wrapped water chestnuts), Chinese Cabbage (I chopped it up and made Sauerkraut out of it), Bok Choy (makes great stir-fry), fresh ginger, garlic and more.

We really enjoy cooking with fresh ingredients in our house and the Bountiful Basket program gives up new items to experiment with.  There are plenty of Bountiful Basket Recipes to be found online.

What is your favorite thing about Bountiful Baskets?

Mouth watering BBQ in Rapid City

Rapid City now has options when it comes to enjoying barbeque.  After Art’s closed there really weren’t any choices.  Then Dickey’s opened and now we even have a Famous Dave’s.  But, have you checked out Jake’s BBQ?Jakes BBQ Rapid City SD

If the rest of the barbeque is as good as my first visit – we are all in for a treat.  I tried a 3-meat plate with beans and slaw.  Wow, it was all good and the chicken was great (I usually don’t like barbequed chicken).  They also have a Friday night smoked prime rib that looks amazing and I’ve yet to try their ribs.

I believe they first set up shop at the corner of Highways 44 and 385.  I really wanted to stop then, but never did.  I finally visited the East North Street location and plan on many future visits.

Just watch for the sign right before the curve that takes you down to Prairie Market.  They have to-go containers, so you can grab some great BBQ on the way home from work.

Have you tried Jake’s yet?
