Spearfish is having free live music downtown every Friday this summer. Last year they called it First Fridays but have expanded and are now calling it Spearfish Downtown Friday Nights.

Spearfish City Campground is a great place to enjoy nature without having to be out of the city limits. This campground has it all. It is a beautiful setting, Spearfish Creek runs on the north side and Hatchery channel meanders through the tent camping area on the south side.
Full-Hookup Camping
The campground has 61 full-hookup sites. They are complete with water, sewer, 50 amp electrical and cable TV.
Tent Camping
The campground has 100 primitive sites for tent camping. Each spot has a fire ring and a picnic table, plus most are located along Hatchery Channel. Other services include: two restroom and shower buildings.
More about the campground
This a very nice park setting. The campground is located next to the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery and Spearfish City Park. In addition, the area is close enough that you can walk to the downtown area.
Check-out is at Noon and you can check-in at 1pm. The campground does have quiet hours from 10pm to 8am. In the wintertime the campground is home to the Madison Ice Rink.
The Snapper Club
The Snapper Club is a historic building located in the City of Spearfish Campground, it was built in 1936 by the Works
Progress Administration. It was once home to the Rifle Club, but now it is available for rent from the City of Spearfish. It is used for wedding receptions, meeting, family and class reunions and more. Visit the city of Spearfish website for rental information
Contact information
To Contact the Spearfish City Campground call them at 605-642-1340. The non-hookup or tent sites can not be reserved, they are first-come first-served, however reservations are allowed for these sites during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Visit the campground website for more information and a campground map.
Recreation
From this campground you are just minutes from many recreation options. Spearfish Canyon offers waterfalls, hiking and scenic drives. Lookout Mountain Park has miles of trails for hiking or biking. And, Crow Peak is a great hike that provides great views of Spearfish.
If you plan on doing a lot of exploring in the area, I recommend picking up a copy of Moon Mount Rushmore & the Black Hills Guide
and Black Hills – Northeast, South Dakota Trails Illustrated Map #751
. They will make navigating the area much easier and enjoyable.

Not only is the Alkali Creek Trailhead an access point for the Centennial Trail – it has a nice Nature trail too. The trail is just over one-half mile long, however in that short distance you will walk through prairie, forest and back to Alkali Creek.
I think this a prefect trail for getting small children used to hiking. The trail is short enough that they shouldn’t get too tired, but if you have to carry them it’s not even a mile long. The trail has loads of
markers – my three year-old and I enjoyed trying to find the next trail maker – then counting how long it took to get there. We saw many flowers and butterflies along the trail too. Be sure to pickup an interpretive pamphlet at the trailhead – there are 10 posts along the path with a small paragraph in the pamphlet explaining the flora and fauna you are encountering.
There is plenty of fresh water at the trailhead/campground and 22 picnic areas. This could be a great afternoon outing and is just 1/2 mile off Interstate 90.
The Alkali Creek Nature Trail is located in the Fort Meade Recreation Area, almost 7,000 acres of public land. The area extends from just south of I-90 at Exit 34 north to Bear Butte State Park. This area is a beautiful part of the Black Hills that I think many people are unaware of – look at my Facebook Ft Mead Rec Area photo album to see more of the area.
