Chubby Chipmunk Deadwood SD

The Chubby Chipmunk may sound like one of those quirky roadside attractions but its actually one of the greatest treasures of the Black Hills. There might not be much gold left the hills (or is there?) but if you think chocolate is just as, if not more, valuable, then you’ll want to make a stop in Deadwood (SD) for a big box of these decadent truffles. They are big, creamy, and full of rich flavor.  If you can’t stop be sure to check out her website.

We don’t eat many sweets so when we do, we like quality. My whole family loves a monthly stop at The Chubby Chipmunk. These lovingly made treats satisfy any sweet tooth. They offer Dark, Milk, and White truffles along with other unique chocolate candies. There is a flavor for everyone. A seasonal favorite, in my family, is the refreshing root beer float. The peanut butter crunch, in dark and milk chocolate, is 100 times better than a commercial peanut butter cup. My oldest child favors the fruity white truffles like keylime pie and raspberry cream. The cinnabon has satisfied my cravings for sweet, spicy, and caky in one gluten free white truffle. The tots will eat anything chocolate and one of my husbands favorites is the dark chocolate trixie made with pure butter toffee.

I love that we can get such a wonderful treasure right in our own backyard. There’s lots to do in the Northern Black Hills so while you’re up here I strongly urge you to try this Deadwood gem.

How do you get to the Chubby Chipmunk?

The Chubby Chipmunk in located at 420 Cliff Street in Deadwood, South Dakota.  It is located in an old Art Deco Style filling station on the South end of Deadwood, just before you would turn to go south on US Hwy 385.

Alpine Inn

Turtle Island Waffle, Alpine Inn, Hill City SD

We recently visited the Alpine Hill in Hill City to celebrate my birthday.  As you can see in the photo above, they give you special treatment on your birthday.

We generally like to go to the Alpine Inn for Lunch.  photo of german food at the Alpine Inn Hill City SDThe German specialties are really a treat.  I love the German Plate and the Reuben sandwich maybe the best you’ll ever taste.  The German potato salad and the sour kraut are side dishes you’ll find yourself craving.

And of course, save room for dessert. The Alpine Inn has a huge selection of Homemade Desserts.  Three of my favorite desserts are Tiramisu, Grand Chocolate Tower and Turtle Island Waffle.

If you are heading to the Alpine Inn for the evening meal, be prepared for a simple menu.  You get to pick a 6 or 9 ounce bacon wrapped filet mignon. With that you get baked potato, Texas toast and a wedge of lettuce with dressing.

Even though the menu for the evening’s main course is simple, you’ll still get to pick from the full dessert menu.

If you are visiting the Black Hills, I recommend a trip to the Alpine Inn in Hill City.  I know many of our guests request a return trip to Hill City when they come back to the Black Hills.  For more information be sure to visit their website.

From Deadwood: Head south on US Hwy 385 for 43 miles.  At the junction with Hwy 16 continue on Hwy 385/16 to Hill City.  You’ll see the Alpine Inn on Main street just after the Everything Prehistoric Gift Shop and right before you get to Granite Sports.

From Rapid City: Hill City is only 27 miles away.  Just head south on US Hwy 16 and follow the signs to Hill City.

Mustang Sally's Deadwood SD

Mustang Sally's

Mustang Sally’s is the place to go for a great burger.  The sign out front says best burger in Deadwood, and I agree.  The burgers are simple, nothing fancy.  I always get the double bacon cheese burger deluxe with fries.  It is just a great burger.  If you have a mighty thirst, they have $4 25 ounce tap beers and of course soda, ice tea and juices for the non-beer drinkers.  If you aren’t hankering for a burger they’ve got chicken, hot dogs, appetizers (mini corn dogs are great) and other menu items too.

Sally's Bacon Double Cheese Burger

Sally’s has a great laid back atmosphere, it has a mom and pop joint feel to it.  The staff is always friendly and attentive.  One half of the place is a sports bar with lots of TVs, a pinball machine and video games.  The other half is a casino.

It is very family friendly.  The sports bar side has lots of booths and tables.  And, since is separate from the casino the kids can run around a little bit.  However, if the weather is nice I always prefer to sit outside.

The outdoor seating is my favorite place to people watch in Deadwood.  Nothing like spending a Black Hills summer afternoon under one of the umbrellas watching all the action on main street.

Where is Mustang Sally’s in Deadwood?

Mustang Sally’s is easy to find, it is right on main street by the parking ramp.  Directly across the street from the Bullock Hotel.  If you are going to Sally’s from the parking ramp, you can enter by the back door in the alley.
You no longer have to wonder – Where to eat in Deadwood SD.
